Paramedic and/or Advanced EMT and/or EMT Basic - Beaufort County Emergency Medical Services

General Work Description: Beaufort County Emergency Medical Services will be conducting interviews for a Paramedic and/or full time Advanced EMT-classification contingent upon the applicant’s current certification.

Performs appropriate level life support work in the Emergency Medical Services program. Work involves responding to the scene of emergency applying necessary medical treatment of sick or injured persons and transporting persons to a medical facility. Work includes participating in community outreach education and prevention programs, preparation of vehicles, cleaning of vehicles, building and grounds, participating in continuous in-service training and assisting members of volunteer emergency medical service organizations as requested. Special working conditions: Employees are exposed to the normal hazards of emergency rescue work, including risk of exposure to human body fluids and infectious diseases, thus the work is subject to the OSHA requirements for blood borne pathogens.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: A successful person in this position must respond to emergency calls, providing basic and advanced life support treatment to patients, as well as transportation to the appropriate medical facility; function at the Paramedic level, abide by the Beaufort County government safety standards and regulations.

A certified Paramedic performs emergency medical acts in accordance with protocols and standards established by the EMS System and Medical Directors; administer approved medications via approved access routes, administer specified solutions by vascular access infusion, perform pulmonary ventilations and obtains 12-lead EKG’s for cardiac diagnostics; perform patient assessment and basic life support techniques in accordance with established protocol, including airway management and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, oxygen administration, hemorrhage control, treatment for shock, bandaging and dressing soft tissue injuries, splinting of fractures and dislocations, treatment of injuries to the head, face, eye, neck, and spine, treatment of injuries to the chest, abdomen and genitalia, provision of basic life support for medical injuries, assisting in normal and abnormal childbirth, treatment of injuries as a result of exposure to heat and cold, treatment of burns, lifting and moving patients for transfer to a medical facility.

Physical Requirements: This work requires the ability to perform very heavy work, exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 75 pounds of force frequently, and/or 50 pounds of force constantly to move objects. This work regularly requires speaking and hearing, frequently requires standing, sitting using hands to finger, handle or feel, lifting independently in excess of 125 pounds (or combined weight of 250 pounds), repetitive motions and occasionally requires walking, climbing, or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, smelling, and pushing and/or pulling.

Education, Training, and Experience: Graduation from high school and moderate experience in advanced emergency medical service, work as a Paramedic, or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Must possess North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services certification as a Paramedic.

Advanced EMT/Basic EMT: Equivalent combination of education and experience. Applicant must currently be certified as an EMT and enrolled in an Advanced EMT or higher certification class with the ability to obtain the certification within 12 months.

Special Requirements: NC EMT and/or NC Advanced EMT and/or NC Paramedic. Certification by the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic; Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification; Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification or acceptable equivalent, Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support certification or acceptable equivalent; Completion of NIMS 100, 200, and 700, and possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license. General Work Description

The primary purpose of this position is to support the delivery of clinical services at Beaufort County Health Department. The Medical Office Assistant is responsible for preparing patients for provider visits and carrying out provider orders within the appropriate scope of practice. This position works under the supervision of the Director of Nursing with clinical guidance provided by the medical provider and Registered Nurses.
Duties and Responsibilities:

Prepare patients for provider visits by obtaining vital signs, chief complaints, and relevant health information; accurately document findings in the electronic health record (EHR)
Assist providers with minor office procedures as needed
Execute provider orders within scope of practice and assist the RN as directed
Clean, disinfect, and restock exam rooms; maintain required cleaning and supply logs
Answer clinic telephone lines, retrieve and route messages, and coordinate patient communication under the guidance of the provider and/or RN
Facilitate referral process by communicating with patients, providers, and external clinical offices
Perform other duties as assigned, including participation in public health response activities such as natural disasters, shelter operations, pandemics, and communicable disease events

General Work Description

The primary purpose of this position is to provide health education and health coaching with a focus on prevention, harm reduction, and the promotion of healthier lifestyles. This position serves as the lead health educator and program coordinator for substance misuse prevention and harm reduction initiatives, including Prevention Point and nicotine cessation programs. Beaufort County Health Department’s Prevention Point Program is an onsite syringe exchange program that provides syringes, Narcan, and educational materials.

Working as part of the health education team, this position participates in health fairs and community events and assists with the Community Health Assessment and State of the County Health Reports. The position also serves as the backup health educator for the PREPare for Success sexual health, school-based education program.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of public health and public health education activities.
General knowledge of modern educational theory and techniques in the field of public health education.
General knowledge of journalistic principles and methods of preparing subject matter in the promotion of public health activities.

Qualifications

This position is open to entry-level candidates with at least a four-year degree. Applicants who do not yet meet all minimum qualifications may be hired at a trainee status, allowing them to gain the required training and experience to advance to the fully qualified position.

A master’s degree in public health education or in public health with a major in public health education; or graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in health education and two years’ experience in public health education or a related field; or graduation from a four-year college or university and three years’ experience in public health education; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

A valid driver's license is required.
